McHenry County Illinois Transition

Supporting Awareness and Action for Resilience & Localization

Inspired by all the Transition talk, I decided to build my own 224 sq ft tiny house. Well, sort of. I actually built it about 10 years ago as an affordable alternative to adding a room addition to my house. As a former remodeling contractor I was able to do all the work myself, except for the concrete slab. I was quite lucky to have put in two south-facing windows which gives me quite a bit of passive heat during the winter. A maple tree to the east keeps it cool in the summer so that I rarely have to run the air conditioner. So now when civilization as we know it comes to an end, I'll be nice and cozy in my tiny house. I didn't know at the time that what a prophetic move I was doing. If any of you are ever in the Arlington Heights area, contact me to drop by and I'll give you a full tour (which will take all of 2 minutes :)

Thanks for the links. Just for the record (I saw that the price of the tiny home in the links was ~$80,000) my tiny house cost ~$5,500. $1,800 of that was concrete, $350 for a gas space heater. I built it in my spare time over a period of 4 months. I put in about 150 man-hours. There is no water or sewage, only electricity and natural gas. Adding water and sewage would really add to the cost, but no where near $80,000. Of course, I did not get any architectural awards for my tiny house.

Of all the Transition stuff, reskilling is of greatest interest to me. End of civilization or not, it's fun to do.

Very nice! A lot of great websites out there on tiny homes, but you have some serious experience already. This one is really cool http://content.usatoday.com/communities/greenhouse/post/2010/07/tin... & http://www.jsonline.com/blogs/entertainment/98029769.html
